SAFEGUARDING HERITAGE, BIODIVERSITY AND LIVELIHOODS

Fisheries represent a source of income, employment and recreation, and contribute to the cultural heritage and food security of the UAE. They form an important part of our marine environment as well. Each species plays a role in the ecosystem and must be protected to preserve the biodiversity of our seas.

Fishing was an important activity for ancient inhabitants of southeastern Arabia. Archaeological studies on some UAE islands have found Hamour bones up to 90 cm long dating back to the early 5th millennium BC. Fish of this size are now rare, but it is not too late to preserve and protect the marine ecosystems of the UAE. By preserving our fish, we are not only helping the environment, but safeguarding an important part of UAE heritage for generations to come.
